In today’s hospitality landscape, true luxury is no longer defined by excess, but by intention. It is found in stories, in processes, and in the people behind the objects that quietly shape a space. This philosophy lies at the heart of the collaboration between The Craft and Tarum Bali, a partnership rooted in sustainability and mindful creation.
Rooted in a concern over the widespread use of synthetic dyes in Indonesia’s textile industry and the environmental damage caused by its waste, Tarum Bali began its journey in the late 1990s with a vision grounded in nature. Since 1998, the brand has explored plant-based natural dyeing processes through extensive research and reference gathering, both within Bali and beyond. At the same time, Tarum Bali embraced the need for flexibility, responding to custom requests from international clients each with their own concepts, designs, fabric types, and batik expressions while continuing to develop responsible production in Indonesia.
Since 2001, Tarum Bali has consistently applied environmentally friendly dyeing methods, allowing every stage of production to be carried out sustainably and with care. More than one hectare of dedicated garden space is cultivated to grow various tree species, whose leaves are harvested and processed as the primary ingredients for natural dyes. While this approach requires more time and a different process than synthetic coloring, it preserves cultural knowledge passed down through generations and reinforces Tarum Bali’s commitment to innovation rooted in tradition.
During our interview with one of Tarum Bali’s artisans, Komang Tri Pujiastuti, fondly known as Komang Puji, the depth of craftsmanship behind each piece becomes evident. Creating a single wall hanging takes approximately a day and a half, beginning with the careful preparation of long threads, transferring them onto the loom, inserting each strand one by one, and finally weaving intricate patterns. “It’s a long process, and the motifs are quite complex,” she explains. Speed is never the goal; patience and precision are.
For Komang Puji, weaving is more than a skill, it is both livelihood and devotion. Through this work, she supports her daily needs while nurturing a deep affection for the craft itself. Each textile carries a quiet intimacy, shaped by hands that understand rhythm, repetition, and care qualities impossible to replicate through mass production.
There is also pride. Starting from nothing, Komang Puji never imagined that her work would one day live within a hotel space, seen and appreciated by guests from around the world. That sense of recognition is woven into every finished piece, transforming fabric into a story of growth, dignity, and shared purpose.
Through the collaboration between The Craft and Tarum Bali, wall hangings become more than decorative objects. They become storytellers speaking of sustainable processes, human connection, and the harmony between design and nature. This partnership reminds us that when spaces are created with intention, even the quietest details can carry lasting meaning.
