The Craft Hotel Ubud

Object No. WOO-007
Hand-Painted Barong Cow Bell
Physical Description:

A hand-carved wooden sculpture inspired by the functional Gongseng (cow bell) found in the rural Balinese countryside, featuring a wide, semi-trapezoidal form that tapers at the top. The frontal surface is dominated by a bold, high-relief carving of a Barong face—a protective spirit in Balinese mythology—characterized by large bulging eyes, bared fangs, and a stylized golden mane. The piece is finished with a vibrant polychrome palette of crimson and gold, accented by rhythmic charcoal-toned strokes that define the creature’s features against a pale, sandstone-colored wood grain. A simple loop of hand-twisted Tali Bagu fiber is threaded through the top, adding an organic, primitive touch to the sophisticated folk-art carving and grounding the mythological subject in its agrarian, village-inspired roots.
