The Craft Hotel Ubud

Object No. WOO-009
Hand-Carved Polychrome Elephant Bust
Physical Description:

A hand-carved wooden bust depicting a majestic elephant with its trunk raised in a traditional gesture of greeting and prosperity. This sculpture, a classic example of 1980s Balinese export craft, features a series of rhythmic horizontal grooves along the neck and trunk that emphasize its elongated, stylized form. The ears are treated with a distinctive pointillist Titik technique, creating a dense, golden-ochre texture that contrasts with the deep, polished mahogany tone of the body. Supported by a base featuring vertical grey-washed striations, the piece balances smooth anatomical curves with intricate decorative borders of golden dots, reflecting a timeless heritage of local village woodcraft.
